CARIN Requests Immediate Action to Address TEFCA Issues
On October 1, 2026, various updates to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Individual Access Services (IAS) under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) went into effect. While promising decreased friction for patients seeking access to their health information, the new SOPs were not uniformly implemented, and several Qualified Health Information Networks were not prepared for the changes. On October 12, the CARIN Alliance sent a letter to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and to the TEFCA Recognized Coordinating Entity requesting immediate action to address these concerns.
